Before borrowing: other ways to approach an expense

A short-term loan is one possible response to a cost. First check whether the amount, timing or payment arrangement can change.

Start with the expense

Identify the amount needed and the deadline. If this is a regular shortfall, a new repayment may make the following month harder.

Can the cost be reduced or delayed?

Ask for a written breakdown, check for an error and separate the essential part from anything optional. A repair, a smaller purchase or a later non-essential expense may change the amount needed. Do not delay urgent essential needs solely because of a budgeting exercise; ask the relevant provider about available help.

Can the provider agree a payment plan?

Contact the organisation you need to pay before the deadline. Ask whether an instalment arrangement exists and what it costs. Confirm any deposit, interest, fees, payment dates and consequences of a missed payment in writing. A payment plan can still be credit and can still be unaffordable.

What resources are already available?

Check savings that can be used without leaving essentials uncovered. If considering an employer advance or help from someone you know, agree the amount, repayment timing and any cost clearly. An advance reduces future income; an informal arrangement can still create an obligation and strain a relationship.

Delay or reduce the expenseWhat happens if I wait, and what amount is genuinely needed?

An advance or personal arrangementWhat future income is already committed to repaying it?
A loanCan every payment fit without needing further borrowing?

Use actual written terms for any option. A lower instalment or a familiar provider does not remove the need to compare the total and the dates.

If existing debts are the problem

Talk to the relevant creditors about the difficulty and consider an NCR-registered debt counsellor when several debts are unmanageable. Lendeka does not offer a debt-consolidation product or an automatic top-up. Start with the support checklist and keep a record of any agreed arrangement.

The budget planner can help you prepare without submitting an application or sharing financial details.
